Pro Setup

At Guitars United all of our Instruments are Professionally Setup before we sell them.

When Guitars United receives a instrument from the factory, the first thing we do is inspect that the instrument was not damaged in shipping. If the instrument is free of damage, we cut the factory strings off, clean the frets, oil the fingerboard (only for rosewood and ebony), inspect the neck, and tighten all hardware such as the machine heads or tuning keys and the 1/4 inch jack (if installed). Next, we restring the instruments with factory recommended strings. After the restring is when the fun starts, this is were we adjust the neck using the truss rod adjustment, adjust the action (how high the strings are over the fingerboard), test the frets for buzzing, and adjust intonation for electric instruments with adjustable saddles, etc. All of this combined is the fine tuning of the instrument, and it all depends on the size strings that the instrument is setup for. Different gauges put different amounts of pressure on the instrument. After we are satisfied with the instrument, we let the instrument set for a few hours. Then we recheck the instrument for any adjustments that may need to be made. This is how a instrument should be sold. It will save you money to know this, because we do not charge you for the setup when purchasing a new or used guitar from Guitars United. A properly setup instrument is important because it influences the player to play longer and will make the player more confident knowing that their instrument is set up properly.

P.S. The most important tool for a player is an electronic tuner. It lets you tune your instrument correctly and accurately in a snap, taking only 45 seconds rather than 5 to 10 minutes. Even pros who feel that they could tune their instruments by ear are usually surprised to see that they are off when testing themselves with an electronic tuner. The reason a tuner is important is because it allows the player to always sound correct, so that the strings will never put too much pressure on the instrument, and that the player will not be likely to pop a string.
